I was scheduled to talk today on Palestine at an event at Hang Seng University. Late last night, I was informed that people from the (very small) local Jewish community in Hong Kong were planning to disrupt the event to combat “Palestinian propaganda.” This morning I received notice that the event was cancelled personally by the university president, Professor Simon HO Shun Man (ä½•é †æ–‡), without explanation.
Hong Kong is no bastion of free speech, but the censorship usually comes from a different direction. I am shocked that the Zionist faction even took notice of such a minor event, in a city where most are apathetic to the issue. My previous talks have been somewhat emotional, a bit psychological, possibly even spiritual, but hardly ever political. I stress the human dimension of the conflict, and provide a nuanced context, to the small sector of the local population that wishes to have information and a perspective that is not “media-ted”. But even this struck fear in people who dare not let an iota of inconvenient truth go uncontested, lest their painstakingly crafted narrative begin to unravel.
